Utilization of natural resources over the border of Finland and Russia - perspectives of natural and social sciences

Event
11.11.2014 (All day) - 12.11.2014 (All day)
Location:
University of Eastern Finland, Yliopistokatu 3 (Aurora, Entrance B, Auditorium AU100) , Joensuu, Finland

The research days focus on natural resources both in Finland and Russia.  Animals, rivers, vegetation types as well as mineral deposits run in both sides of the border, but the management and policies often change at border. What we can learn from the differences and similarities? What are impacts of the policies in both sides of the borders? How use of resources changes when crossing the border?  By raising these questions, we aim to inspire discussion on use and value of natural resources and challenge to find new perspectives on researching natural resources.

Nordregio,Skeppsholmen, Stockholm, Sweden

The "bio-economy" has become a concept that links the challenges and opportunities with the transition to sustainable development. There is a need to generate new ways of working, new processes, services and products that can contribute to such a transition. Research and policy actors nationally and internationally are supporting various initiatives to address this need- not least with the establishment of the EU Bioeconomy Observatory.
