Today is Earth Day! A day everyone should spend some thoughts on how we treat our planet and how we could do better for a sustainable and better future for future generations.This year, Earth Day stands for preventing climate change and all the resulting documents from COP21 in Paris in December 2015 will be signed. Thereby trees and forest are in focus! Forests as global CO2 capturers can contribute a great deal to mitigating climate change.

Last month in September, the World Forestry Congress (WFC) 2015 took place in Durban, South Africa. We, Elin Andreasson, Helene Larsson & Joakim Lundsten, were there as student representatives from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences’ Master of Science in Forestry program. Forest researchers often discuss forest values other than the traditional ones. But what are these ‘other values’? To answer that, we must first assume that trees and forests have some primary values. Most often these values are considered to be relating to wood and biomass production. In that case, other values must be something different – new products like medicine, or services like carbon sequestration or protection from soil erosion.

Like all other sectors, forestry continuously fights for the attention of public and politicians. In this effort we keep changing our focus and message, from combating ‘acid rain’ to biodiversity conservation, from recreation to bio-energy. It is important to realize, however, that we often tend to concentrate on the ‘real’ or outer forest, the forests that are actually ‘out there’. But at least just as important are people’s ‘inner forests’, the forests of their mind.
